Trim σε raid0 Καλα νεα!!

Intel Making TRIM on RAID Possible?
The TRIM command feature has become an industry standard for internal garbage collection on SSDs. Unlike with magnetic storage devices such as hard drives, in NAND flash storage devices, new data can't simply be overwritten on existing deleted data (like overwriting on cassette tapes), instead NAND flash cells are first put through erase cycles, and then fresh data is written on them. This leads to degradation of performance in SSDs, as all deleted data will be put through erase cycles. The TRIM command allows the drive to tag freshly deleted data for disposal, and then erase flash memory occupied by that data when idling, and dynamically allocating erased cells for fresh data. This dramatically reduces write performance degradation of SSDs. Unfortunately, issuing TRIM commands to SSDs that are part of a RAID volume is so far not possible, because the RAID volume acts as a sort of an abstraction layer between the OS and physical disks. Some low-level data about member disks can still be read by diagnostic tools, but that's about it.

If the Release Notes document of Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver 11.5.0.1109 Alpha (read here) is to be believed, Intel plans to bring TRIM support to RAID 0 volumes with a future version of RST. Snooping through the document, one can find the following line:
2. This release will not enable the TRIM on RAID0 feature, but it will be added in the next RST 11.5 release. Contact your RST AE representative with questions.

Καλα νεα αρκει να δωσουν την OROM 11.5 bios για την μητρικη σου αλλιως δεν.
Ευχομαι να μην ξεχασουν το παλιοσειρι X58.

1. Known Issue is defined as a potential RST issue that has been replicated internally by the Rapid Storage Technology team but has not been root caused to be an RST defect.
2. This release will not enable the TRIM on RAID0 feature, but it will be added in the next RST 11.5 release. Contact your RST AE representative with questions.
3. This is the first release of RST that includes UEFI driver support. Note that the UEFI driver will not work with any previous releases of the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager/Rapid Storage Technology product. This means if you plan to use the RST 11.5 UEFI driver then you must use the RST 11.5 driver as well.
4. The RAID OROM version for this release is 11.5.0.1111, the driver and user interface version is 11.5.0.1109.
5. This release contains the CLI (Command Line Interface) replacement utility for RAIDCFG32. There is a 32 and 64 bit CLI utility which reside in the CLI 32 & 64 bit Utility component of this kit.
6. The Windows 8 version used during RST validation of this release is 8028.
7. When an ODD is in the Zero Power state, some ODDs may disappear when a hardware re-scan is initiated via the Windows Device Manager. A second hardware re-scan conducted before the Zero Power Idle Timeout value is reached (default is 60s) will return the drive to an OS visible state. This behavior is believed to be related to the length of time an ODD requires to become ready during power on from the zero-power state.
8. Microsoft* .NET Framework 3.0 is required to be installed on the system in order for the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology User Interface to install. Note that not all Microsoft* Operating Systems have .NET 3.0 installed by default. Refer to the Microsoft* website for details.

Ακομα και σε ποιο παλια chipsets!!

In 2012, it looks like Intel learned its lesson and the company is bringing serious improvements with its Rapid Storage Technology software suite 11.5 and 11.6 (Windows 8 refresh).
The company is making a big cleanup in order to prepare for Windows 8. For example, all chipsets are being updated to support "UEFI pre-OS Solution", one of primary requirements for Windows 8. Furthermore, CLI 32-bit and 64-bit utilities are replacing the old RAIDCfg32 and RAIDCfg64 command line utilities, supporting "Windows 8 specific features".
We have already disclosed that RST 11.5 is bringing what we believe to be the key feature for adoption of Solid Storage Drives (SSDs) into enterprise, and that is TRIM and Garbage Collection when SSDs are inside a RAID array. We know today that the supported RAID arrays modes are 0 (stripping), 1 (mirror), 1+0 and 5 (min three drive stripe with redundancy).
RST RAID is also getting a Verify and Repair Scheduler, enabling users to "schedule V&R operations on daily, weekly or monthly basis". Given that out of all RAID controllers we have tested Intel has the slowest RAID5 rebuild time, this is a welcoming change.
The most welcoming piece of news is that Intel RST 11.5 will even support several year old Eagle Lake (3-Series) and Montevina (4-Series) Chipsets. We are talking about ICH9M, ICH9ME, ICH10R, ICH10DO and ICH10D Southbridges. Support for Ibex Peak (5-Series), Cougar Point (6-Series) and Panther Point (7-Series - Maho Bay, Chief River and Carlow-WS) is also a given. RST 11.5 is expected to formally debut in the first half of 2012 (alpha versions are in the wild already), with 11.6 being a refreshed version with full support for Windows 8 which are expected to arrive during third quarter of this year.
