Το VLC έφτασε στην έκδοση 3.0, η οποία φέρει την κωδική ονομασία "Vetinari" και έρχεται με αρκετά νέα χαρακτηριστικά, στα οποία περιλαμβάνεται υποστήριξη 8K, αλλά και streaming σε Chromecast συσκευή, ακόμα και περιεχομένου που δεν υποστηρίζεται απευθείας από το Chromecast hardware. Είναι άμεσα διαθέσιμο για λειτουργικά συστήματα Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone και Windows RT.
Μερικά από τα νέα χαρακτηριστικά του VLC 3.0 είναι η ακόμα υποστήριξη για βίντεο 360 μοιρών, τρισδιάστατο ήχο, ακόμα περισσότερους τύπους αρχείων πολυμέσων και υποτίτλων, αλλά και hardware επιτάχυνση σε βίντεο ανάλυσης 4K και 8K. Επίσης σε Windows 10 Fall Creators Update υπάρχει υποστήριξη για HDR10, ενώ σε Android υποστήριξη για Picture in Picture. Υπάρχει ακόμα υποστήριξη για Blu-Ray Java menus, αλλά και δυνατότητα browsing αποθηκευτικών μέσω που είναι συνδεδεμένα σε τοπικό δίκτυο και συστημάτων NAS.
