Akasa Cool Blue Chipset Cooler Review

The days that personal computers were a rather simple, quiet and low temperature devise belong to the past. Nowadays the situation became more complex, since our P.C. ’s are equipped with a lot of “heat rising” devices. Not only our “state of the art” processors, but also our graphic cards, memory dims, even the HDD’s and the motherboard itself, are sources of heat increase. Especially for the motherboards, one of the most “hot” spots is the chipset, something that manufacturers are well aware of, so they usually provide dedicated heatsink (with or without fan) in order to reduce the rise of heat. This is the normal procedure nowadays.

And when the issue comes to more efficient cooling than the standard offered, or more “character” and design for our PC; here comes AKASA and their COOL BLUE.

THE COOLER

CoolBlue, is a pretty enough cooler, capable to reduce the temperature increase in the chipset area, but also efficient in cooling down our graphic card, since it can easily replace the relevant cooler. It is even more useful to the ones that like to give a personalized “character” to their PC ‘s, since CoolBlue can give a totally different look to a modded computer. The justification of our assertion comes right after, looking to the relevant photos.

INSTALLATION

The cooler was easily installed in our system, especially due to the existence of the thermally conductive adhesive transfer tape.

As far as the noise issue is concerned, the 23,03 db that the small blue looming fan, although were enough to remind of its presence in our watercooled system, were not disturbing at all.

TEST SYSTEM

The system that was used to install and test COOL BLUE of AKASA, is as follows:

  • CASE: COOLERMASTER STACKER BLACK
  • PSU: FORTRON 550W
  • CPU: P4 3000@3900
  • MOBO: ASUS P4P800 VDIM MOD
  • RAM: 2X512 OCZ EL 3200 PLATINUM REV.2
  • VGA: LEADTEK 6600GT
  • SOUNDCARD: AUDIGY 1
  • HDD: 4X200 IDE & SATA SEAGATE
  • DVDRW: NEC2500
  • CDRW: PLEXTOR PLEXWRITER PX-W5224TA

In order to overclock our Northwood P4 from 3000Mhz to 3900Mhz, we increased the motherboard voltages, through BIOS. The result was simply that the stock provided chipset cooler (passive cooling) was unable to withstand the extra “loads” and the system was fully unstable. We replaced the stock chipset cooler by CoolBlue and the system recovered the desired stability, not mentioning the extra “character” that arose.

In general, the 12V cooler from AKASA, impressed us positively. The blue color, the thermally conductive adhesive transfer tape and the long cable that can be easily adjusted to a fan control panel, are considered as main assets.
