DOOM 3 BFG Edition coming to PS3, 360, PC this autumn

Bethesda’s announced a BFG Edition of DOOM 3, coming to Xbox 360, PC and PS3 this autumn.

The pack will contain remastered versions of the vanilla edition of the shooter, as well as add-on Resurrection of Evil and seven new levels called “The Lost Mission”.

All elements of the remastered DOOM 3, including Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission, will be optimised in 5.1 surrond sound and features 3D support. It’ll also have improved rendering and lighting and a new checkpoint system for better progression through the game.

PS3 trophies and 360 achievements will also be included.

All versions of the BFG Edition will also come with the original DOOM 1 and 2, meaning it’ll be the first time all three titles in the series have appeared on PS3.

“DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” said id tech boss John Carmack. “Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls.”

Carmack added: “New support for 3D TVs, monitors and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”

id Software has trouble porting Doom 3: BFG with 60fps on PS3, more details about its new content

It appears that id Software has trouble porting Doom 3: BFG with 60fps on Sony’s platform and that was revealed by guru John Carmack himself. When a fan asked whether id Software would include some new graphical effects to the PS3 version (like DoF), Carmack said that getting Doom 3 BFG to 60fps on the PS3 is more challenging than most of us would think. Carmack blaimed stencil shadows for it as they are ‘raster pigs’. And obviously, Doom 3 BFG will not include any new graphical features. PS3 gamers, there is no reason to worry though as we bet that Carmack will find a way to overcome those issues.

PC gamers, on the other hand, will be able to use all those great looking mods (like Sikkmod 1.2) with the BFG Edition of Doom 3. When asked whether id Software was interested in offering a graphical overhaul for the PC, Carmack did not comment.

Tim Willits, on the other hand, unveiled some new information about the new content of the Doom 3 BFG Edition. In an interview with TheVerge, Willits said that Doom 3 “Lost Mission” will put players in the boots of the Bravo Team. In case you are unaware of, Bravo Team was the company of space marines that were originally sent to save the scientists in Doom 3.

As Willits said:

“The Lost Mission begins with one of the Bravo Team members waking up in a Wraith kill room, and having to help a group of scientists shut down a teleporter to Earth, before the demons invade and ruin everything.”

The Lost Mission will take place in the same timeframe with Doom 3′s story, and will help fill in some of the game’s gaps.

Doom 3 BFG is currently planned for an Autumn release on PC, PS3 and X360!

DOOM 3:BFG Edition – id’s “first inclination” was to make “big sweeping changes” to the game

Eric Webb, producer on DOOM 3: BFG Edition at id Software, has told the PS Blog the team went through “a few different iterations,” of the game in order to make sure the 3D felt right in it, and while doing so, the team also pushed aside it’s inclination to make “big sweeping changes,” in order to keep the core experience there along side the additions.
