    FSX Thread.

Is FSX IS the Next Level in flight sim Gaming ? This game has potentially, but you really need a high spec machine to get good performance. After the relese of sp1 & DX-10 You will enjoy fsx to the max . Is the poor frame rate a killer issue? That's arguable and depends on how much you require in terms of smooth frame rates in a civilian flight sim. Some people may want to wait until tweaks have been established that boost the performance or until they invest in new hardware. Others may decide to put up with less-than-stellar performance to be able to enjoy the amazing content and plethora of rich experiences that Flight Simulator X offers. What is not arguable is that Flight Simulator X provides a quantity and quality of flight simulation capabilities that would be amazing in a product that costs twice the price. Editor Doug Horton review on Computer Pilot. Editor Doug Horton clarifies that the title runs on multiple versions of Windows, not Vista-only, and that it does not utilize DirectX 10 yet. Moreover, the writer also notes that you do not need a Cray z computer or a new graphics card to run the game, but calls out the inaccuracy of the minimum system requirements posted on Microsofts Web site. Doug Hortonemphasizes that the newly featured missions add new possibilities and opportunities instead of taking away from the simulator experience, writing, quite frankly, I had a load of fun going through some of them. He goes on to highlight improvements in aircraft, comparable performance to Flight Simulator 9 and notes that the title is not just a graphics update! Dumas also mentions several times the lack of need to buy new hardware before Windows Vista and DirectX 10 come out later this year, as there will be new upgrades and add-ons. MS flight Sim fsx. Get a Direct X 10 Video Card and Vista if all you're after is a great Flight Simulation game. You will drool. Of course, those cards to be mildly in our humble price range won't be available till Summer. But seriously, i would hold off on spending anything until then. FSX was designed for DX10 and Vista. Flight Simulator XTech Tips The following information will outline exactly what settings need tweaking in order to get the best custom tailored experience no matter what NVIDIA or ATI Graphics Card you own. These tech tips will truly let you play the game The Way It's Meant To Be Played Try This Using in-game AF (anisotropic filtering) is always better than forcing AF in Driver Control Panel. It's always faster and gives virtually the same image quality, because game developers know exactly which surfaces need anisotropic filtering and which don't. It allows the GPU to save the precious resources and achieve better gameplay. Use in-game AF in Microsoft's Flight Simulator X to achieve better image quality. What is the difference between the standard and deluxe versions? The deluxe version includes everything the standard version does, plus the following additions: - 24 airplanes (6 more than standard edition) - 45 high-detail airports (5 more than standard edition) - 38 high-detail cities (10 more than standard edition) - 50+ structured missions (20 more than standard edition) - Glass panel (G1000) cockpit (not included in standard edition) - Tower controller application (not included in standard edition). What are the minimum system requirements? These are the specs listed by Microsoft: I Find it a bit wrong. - Windows XP SP2 with 256 Mb RAM - Windows Vista with 512 Mb RAM - 1.0 GHz Processor - DirectX 9.0c compliant Video Card with 32Mb RAM - 15 Gb Hard Drive Space - DVD Drive What are the recommended system requirements? - Windows XP SP2 with 1024 Mb RAM - Windows Vista with 1024 Mb RAM - 2.0 GHz+ Processor - DirectX 9.0c compliant Video Card with 256Mb RAM - 15 Gb Hard Drive Space - DVD Drive What is the absolute best system to run FSX? The simple answer to this one is to buy the fastest system you can afford at the time. Focus specifically on the CPU speed, as much fast DDR memory as you can afford and the best video card as well. For a good roundup on what video cards, CPUs and memory are the best. Ideally, a good FSX system will have at least a 3Ghz dual core processor, at least 2Gb DDr2 fast memory and a Radeon X1950 or Nvidia 8800 series card or better. IF YOUR FSX and frame rates are poor ? 1)This could be for a number of reasons. It could be that you are simply running it on a system that is not fast enough to run the software 2)because some user has everything (detail, graphic, traffic and scenery-wise) turned up to maximum ! Not even the fastest system available right now can probably run FSX with all options maxed out. found out that it is possible to get good frame rates if you are willing to turn down, or turn off some items that aren't as important as others. 3)Another important factor is how well your hard drive is performing ? If you have a drive that is full of unorganized files, it will take FSX longer to find those files on your drive when it needs to load them, causing a drop in performance, and overall frame rates. If the files and organised well on the drive, FSX can find them quickly, load them into memory and ultimately deliver better sim performance. To organise your files on the hard disk you need a defragmentation software program. Additionally, there is a good tweaking article compiled by Greg Germanowski on how you can improve FSX performance. You can find that article at: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this document. http://members.cox.net/spambait/FSXTweakGuide.pdf If u have problems installing & uninstall fsx ? Read this Microsoft Tech article and follow instructions : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Some fsx pdf help files : Microsoft Flight Simulator Essentials: http://www.bruceair.com/CDContents/Microsoft%20Flight%20Simulator%20Essentials.pdf Microsoft Flight Simulator X Key Commands: http://www.bruceair.com/CDContents/FSX_KeyCommands.pdf The difference in framerate in simply going from a 6300 @ 1.8ghz to a 6800 @ 2.9Ghz is over 50%, this is solely down to Cpu clockspeed. The amd family of chips dont do well at all in FSX compared to C2D. only in the upcoming month we will really know the answer !

THE FSX.CFG MADE EASY ! WINDOWS VISTA DEFRAG TIP FILE/FOLDER NAME FILE/FOLDER LOCATION fsx.cfg file WINDOWS VISTA USERS: Located in Desktop*****AppData/Roaming/MicrosoftFSX/fsx.cfg ----------------------------------------------------------------- WINDOWS XP USERS: Located in C:Documents and Settings*****Application Data/MicrosoftFSX/fsx.cfg enable the view C:Documents and Settings/tools/folder options/view show hidden files and folders. The first place I like to start is by modifying the fsx.cfg file. Many people are intimidated by modifying this file, but not to worry. You must make a backup of the files you'r modifying befor doing this tweaks. Now ,If you backed-up your file, let's get started. Double-click on the fsx.cfg file (for the location of this file, see the text below). If you are prompted to select a program to open the file, select "Notepad". The sections in the fsx.cfg file are categorized by sections stated in brackets. i.e. [MAIN] This file may reside on a different drive. The XX in the file location refers to wherever your Application DataMicrosoft file resides. This may be the name of your system, or perhaps Administrator. This file can only be accessed by opening your "Computer" (Windows Vista) or "My Computer" (Windows XP), then clicking on the "Tools" tab, then "Folder Options", then "View". Make sure that you have checked the box next to "Hidden Files and Folders" and "Show Hidden Files and Folders". TWEAK #1 FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION To reduce this cause of the blurries, we reworked how Flight Simulator X scheduler prioritizes background tasks in FSX. Now much more CPU time is devoted to loading scenery data, including terrain textures, at the expense of somewhat lower frame rates. In my opinion, this change has mostly solved this cause of the blurries, although the scenery loader can still get behind at extremely low frame rates (less than 10 fps) or at very large airspeeds (faster than 600 knots). There are several ways to adjust how much CPU time FS devotes to loading scenery and textures. The easiest way is to set the target frame rate slider to a value that your machine can consistently achieve. The lower you set the slider, the more CPU time is diverted from rendering to loading data. Another thing you can do is to modify the following variable in FSX.CFG: FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=X.XX This variable determines the amount of CPU time given to loading scenery data as a fraction of the time spent rendering. For example, the default value of 0.33 means that for every 3 milliseconds spent rendering, FS will give 1 millisecond to the scenery loader. If necessary, you can use a larger value to devote more time to loading (any number between 0.01 and 0.99). Or, if you don't have a problem with the blurries and you want slightly higher frame rates, then you can use a smaller value. Should you choose to use this "tweak", here's how to do it: Insert a line directly under the [MAIN] section and enter FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33 Experiment with the number entered here and adjust them to your taste for a balance of quality & speed. It has been reported that for true photoscenery depending on your PC specifications, you may need to set this value as high as 0.50 or even 0.66. I have found that a setting of 0.10 will allow you to have your Autogen set to "Very Dense" or "Extremely Dense" and maintain a 20 - 25 FPS rate. TWEAK #2 INCREASING TEXTURE BANDWIDTH I suspect the default value of TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT is a little conservative (40), so on most systems it's probably worth experimenting with increasing the value. How much you can increase it before you start to experience side effects such as increased stuttering depends on your system, particularly the amount and type of main memory, the type of graphics card and the amount of graphics card memory. I recommend a setting of 400.you can test also 800 ? Should you choose to use this "tweak", here's how to do it: Under the [DISPLAY] section, change this line to read TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400 TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400 (800?) try it & test . TWEAK #3 REMOVING ANNOYING DISPLAY MESSAGES Turn off the red warning text message for brakes, pause, etc. Should you choose to use this "tweak", here's how to do it: Under the [DISPLAY] section, change this following lines to read InfoBrakesEnable=False InfoParkingBrakesEnable=False InfoPauseEnable=False InfoSlewEnable=False InfoStallEnable=False InfoOverspeedEnable=False You are changing anything that reads "True" to "False" TWEAK #4 IMPROVING AUTOGEN This tweak adjusts the number of Autogen objects are rendered in Flight Simulator X. The values I recommend below are what I am currently using and I have had substantial increases in frame rates without sacrificing Scenery Quality. Should you choose to use this tweak, here's how to do it: Insert the following (2) lines directly under the [TERRAIN] section TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=400 TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000 Replace the numbers with a number between 0 and 6000. The lower the number, the fewer autogen objects will get displayed and the greater your frame rates might be. The actual number used by FSX will scale based on your Autogen Density Slider in FSX. In other words, the slider still has an effect, this just changes the scale of the slider. I have found that using 400 in the TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL section and 3000 in the TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL section gives a nice balance of speed and quality. OR ? TRY set it to: & TEST ! up to you . TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=800 TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=3000 WINDOWS VISTA DEFRAG TIP ! WINDOWS XP Defrag to Windows Vista (Procedure) If you have attempted to use the defrag utility in Windows Vista you would know how terrible it is. Well Guess What? With a bit of work, you can bring back the XP Defrag Utility and have it working in Windows Vista. This guide is geared more towards those folks that would fall into the intermediate to advanced skill range. Beginners/Newbies: it is recommended that you not attempt this. Disclaimer: Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify system files located in your System32 folder incorrectly. If you choose to follow this guide, you understand that any changes made to your system files are done so at your own risk, Every effort has been made to ensure that the suggested changes are correct and safe. Furthermore, you agree that I cannot be held responsible for any potential damage done to your system by using this guide. What you will need: Access to a Windows XP Disk Logged into Windows Vista as a user with Admin permissions Some time : About 15-25 mins Lots of Patience (parts of this procedure are very tedious) First, we need to create a new folder in the C: directory. Name the new folder xpdefragfiles (Note: when you are done with this procedure you can delete this folder) Next, we need to grab the XP defrag files from the Windows XP Disk. Stick your XP Disk into your CD Drive, then when the autoplay box pops up, close it. We need to launch a command prompt window, so click the start Orb, then type CMD. And you should see the cmd prompt, click on it and it will launch. Now, we need to get the XP defrag files off of the CD, to do this we will use the Expand command. Please note that the commands I have listed below work if your main drive is C: and the CD Drive is D: . You will have to check to see what drive letter your main drive and your CD Drive is before you continue. If your main drive and/or your CD Drive is assigned to a different letter, please adjust the command accordingly. (Note: after each line Hit the Enter Key) expand D:i386dfrg.ms_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrg.msc expand D:i386dfrgfat.ex_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrgfat.exe expand D:i386dfrgntfs.ex_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrgntfs.exe expand D:i386dfrgres.dl_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrgres.dll expand D:i386dfrgsnap.dl_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrgsnap.dll expand D:i386dfrgui.dl_ C:xpdefragfilesdfrgui.dll expand D:i386defrag.ex_ C:xpdefragfilesdefrag.exe Next we need to remove the current Windows Vista defrag files. To do this we have to alter the permissions on each one of these files. To do this, navigate to your main drive then go into the Windows Folder, then the System32 Folder. Then locate the file, defrag.exe, right click on it and go to Properties ----------------------------------------------------------------- Then Click on the Security Tab Then Click Advanced Then Click on the Owner Tab Then Click Edit Then Click Other Users or Groups Then Click Advanced Then Click Find Now Finally, locate your Username and select it, then click Ok 4 times (there will be a pop up box warning, just click OK to it) Finally, we are done setting the permissions for the defrag.exe file. Now, repeat this procedure for the following files: dfrgfat.exe dfrgifc.exe dfrgifps.dll dfrgNtfs.exe dfrgRes.dll dfrgsnap.dll dfrgui.dll dfrgui.exe Next, we need to move all of the Vista Defrag Files out of the System32 folder. I strongly suggest keeping these somewhere, just in case. I moved these to a folder in my Documents called VistaDefragFiles. To do thisYou should be in your System32 folder, simply hold the CONTROL button down on your keyboard and then with your mouse click on: defrag.exe, dfrgfat.exe, dfrgifc.exe, dfrgifps.dll, dfrgNtfs.exe, dfrgRes.dll, dfrgsnap.dll, dfrgui.dll, dfrgui.exe . Then let go of CONTROL then hit CONTROL + X (Cut), then navigate to Documents/VistaDefragFiles then hit CONTROL + V (Paste) Almost done, our next step is to take the XP Files that we copied to C:xpdefragfiles, and copy them to our C:WindowsSystem32 folder. So Open C:xpdefragfiles, and hit CONTROL + A (Select All) then hit CONTORL + C (Copy). Then navigate to C:WindowsSystem32 and then hit CONTROL + V (Paste) Finally, we need to register our Dlls, so we need to launch a command prompt window, so click the start Orb, then type CMD. And you should see the cmd prompt, click on it and it will launch. Type the following commands (hitting Enter at the end of each line). Note: You will get a pop up box confirming that the dll has registered sucessfully CD C:WindowsSystem32 regsvr32 dfrgui.dll regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll regsvr32 dfrgres.dll Finally, we need to update our shortcuts. So click on the start orb, then go to Accessories, then System Tools, then Right Click on Defrag and go to Properties. Then change the shortcut link to C:WindowsSystem32dfrg.msc, click Apply and you are done DISCLAIMER I hold no responsibility for any damage that may be caused on your system by utilizing the fore mentioned information listed in this website, nor do I imply any guarantee that any of the fore mentioned information will work on your system. There is an updated Benchmark version at: http://www.excitingsimulations.com/FSX/FSX-Benchmark01-v11.zip The changes: 1. I found a "bug" in the Mountain Flying 01 save. It does not influence the benchmark, but I corrected it nevertheless. 2. I added the "Automatic" column allowing for benchmarking for the FSX automatic "optimized/default" settings - the ones which are estimated as being the "best" based on your system's specs. You will be surprised when you check those against the other settings. 3. I added the benchmark results of my system, as an example on how the Benchmark results form should be filled in. =============================================================== FSX Benchmark V 1.1 Copyright 2006, Al Lawrence PC manufacturer (if applicable) self-built CPU Type Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU GHz 2.4 Motherboard Intel Lemont Graphics card eVGA 7900GT Graphics RAM 256MB Graphics Driver v91.47 System RAM 2GB /5200 Hard Disk Seagate 7200rpm Operating System VWinXP Pro BENCHMARK RESULTS CLEAR SKIES Settings Low Settings Mid Settings MAX Automatic Test 01 - Seattle >200 29 6 >115 Test 02 - Landing at KJFK >120 14 2.3 53 Test 03 - Bush Flying 01 >280 53 13 >190 Test 04 - Bush Flying 02 >280 50 15 >200 Test 05 - Mountain Flying 01 >300 120 37 >280 Test 06 - Mountain Flying 02 >280 110 30 >250 Test 07 - At FL350 01 >280 100 40 >250 Test 08 - At FL350 02 >280 190 40 >250 Test 09 - At FL350 03 >300 >280 >120 >250 FAIR WEATHER Settings Low Settings Mid Settings MAX Automatic Test 01 - Seattle >150 25 5.8 100 Test 02 - Landing at KJFK >120 14 1.4 50 Test 03 - Bush Flying 01 >250 48 14 >190 Test 04 - Bush Flying 02 >200 50 15 >180 Test 05 - Mountain Flying 01 >200 65 16 120 Test 06 - Mountain Flying 02 >250 80 22 >210 Test 07 - At FL350 01 >240 77 27 160 Test 08 - At FL350 02 >250 110 20 >200 Test 09 - At FL350 03 >250 >150 50 >220 MAJOR THUNDERSTORM Settings Low Settings Mid Settings MAX Automatic Test 01 - Seattle >150 25 5.5 100 Test 02 - Landing at KJFK >80 14 2.1 50 Test 03 - Bush Flying 01 >220 48 14 >180 Test 04 - Bush Flying 02 >220 48 14 80 Test 05 - Mountain Flying 01 >120 70 21 100 Test 06 - Mountain Flying 02 >220 80 30 >180 Test 07 - At FL350 01 >250 85 21 >200 Test 08 - At FL350 02 >250 >110 34 >200 Test 09 - At FL350 03 >250 >150 50 >210 Have fun. another experiment - this time with my own "optimized settings". These are settings where I set the sliders in such a way that they provide me with the right balance betwen visual diversity and realism and actual performance. I mostly fly jets but when I lans, I want to have a smooth experience around relatively dense airports and cities. I ran the benchmark with my own settings and I like the results. The lowest FPS I got was 19 in the second test - the KJFK Landing scenario - while the average on all situations is @ 25-40 and that explains why I have no issues with FSX whatsoever. BTW - I use no tweaks and no special tricks. My graphic card is set at 2Q Antialiasing and 4x Anisotropic. I do make a small effort to kill all the unnecessary background applications though before starting FSX. Of course I want to run FSX with all the sliders up, and one day very soon I will, but for now, I am getting a big kick out of it as it is - and it looks so much better than my old FS9 with all the sliders up and super fps. for your knowledge only . The quote stated The latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator* X, Service Pack One (SP1), due out later this month, is a great match for the extreme multi-core processing delivered by the new Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor and Flight Sim X SP1 greatly increases multicore utilization and will scale as more threads are available leading to reduced load times as well as frame rate improvements and greater visual complexity during flight. The Flight Simulator team at Microsoft is pleased to work with Intel to provide our end users with a great gaming experience." And I wanted to take some time and explain what this means for FSX and FSX flyers. Our multi-core support will take advantage of both 2 and 4 cores today, and more cores in the future when they become available via a config setting. This is for both Intel and AMD processors. At load time, we run the terrain loading on threads across the cores. This can result in reduced load times, the actual percent reduction can vary but it could be reduced by as much as 1/3. At render time, we run the terrain texture synthesis on threads across the cores. During flight on multi-core machines, as terrain and terrain textures are loaded you will notice significant multi-core usage. As all tiles are loaded, the multi-core usage will fall off, this is expected. As the terrain is re-lit, approximately every minute, you will see multi-core usage increase. As you bank and load terrain tiles, or as you fly forward and force a load of more terrain tiles, you will see the multi-core usage increase. At render time, we now perform more extensive batching of objects to reduce our API Draw calls. The batch rebuilds are also performed on a thread and scheduled on cores. For those of you on single core machines, we did do some performance work to benefit you as well. The batching work will help even on a single core. Plus we made some changes to animations to make them perform better and we modified how we draw trees to reduce API SetTexture calls. So we really tried to hit all the wickets with our performance work. I still dont want to make any final FPS gain claims, and will stick with my conservative 20%. We expect it to be more, but we need to get Beta2 out and see where we are. As far as the release date for SP1, we need to get Beta2 out and see what remains. The last day of April is still possible, but any significant Beta2 bugs will cause us to fix them and delay we want SP1 to be right for the community and are not tied to a date. Note - hyperthreaded is not multi-core. Our current plan is to treat HT machines as single-core since we noticed extensive collisions between threads which caused stutters.
