What kind of game is Sins of a Dark Age?

Sins of a Dark Age is a "Hero and Commander Strategy" game that mixes Traditional Real-Time Strategy with the more recent Action Real-time Strategy (see below). One Commander is joined by a small group of Heroes to fight against another online team or against the AI in specific scenarios.

What is the difference between a Hero and a Commander?

The Commander is responsible for managing the high level tasks and strategy such as base building, defense positioning, scouting, supplementary resource acquisition, army building, army control, timely use of your specific Commander's Realm Powers and more. You choose your Commander type at the beginning of the match and he/she does not have a 3d avatar in the game session.

Heroes are responsible for supporting their Commander's army in battle, annihilating the enemy Commander's army, assassinating enemy Heroes, collecting additional resources and much more depending on the specific Hero type. You choose your Hero type at the beginning of a match and he/she is represented by a fully controllable avatar in the game session.

What is a Traditional Real-Time Strategy game?

This refers to the branch of RTSs that first became popular in the mid 1990's. Typically, the player chooses one of a variety of maps and begins his game sessions with one primary structure and handful of resource gatherers. The gatherers are used to acquire resources scattered about the map and to construct additional structures such as defenses and production centers. By spending resources, the player can produce increasingly powerful military units that can be sent into battle against enemy forces with the ultimate goal of wiping out all his structures and winning the game.

What is an Action Real-Time Strategy game?

This is a common name given to a branch of RTSs that emerged from a popular Traditional RTS modding scene. Typically, a group of 5 heroes combat other group of 5 heroes where the objective is to kill the other team's primary structure. The map typically consists of 3 lanes guarded by towers over which waves of minions travel and an internal "jungle" area where more powerful creatures lie. As heroes kill minions, jungle creatures and other heroes they gain experience and resources. Experience is used to level up and indirectly to select new abilities and resources are used to acquire new equipment making the hero ever more powerful.

What is a hybrid of Traditional RTS and Action RTS like?

It's very different yet immediately accessible. We feel we've incorporated the best of both worlds and innovated in both. The details of what this overall experience is like will be revealed progressively over time.

What new features will Sins of a Dark Age include compared to other RTS games?

We will revealing these progressively over time but rest assured, Sins of a Dark Age differs from other Traditional and Action RTS games. We wanted to create a completely new and unique experience.

Is Sins of a Dark Age an expansion or sequel to Sins of a Solar Empire?

No, they are completely separate strategy games but they were both built by the same award winning team. The Sins of a Solar Empire name will be used for Ironclad's science fiction games and Sins of a Dark Age will be used for Ironclad's fantasy games.

Why make a new strategy game and not Sins of a Solar Empire 2?

Our original plan was to create one more major expansion for Sins of a Solar Empire which is called Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This is currently in production and will be in beta shortly. After working on science fiction for a very long time we wanted to give fantasy a try and Sins of a Dark Age is the result. We have plans for the Sins of a Solar Empire series and will return to it in the future.

Is Sins of a Dark Age hard to play?

Not at all. It was designed to be as accessible as possible despite being a sophisticated strategy game. New players will find it easy to jump in and experienced strategy game players will find their Traditional RTS and Action RTS skills still apply.

Will Sins of a Dark Age have a hostile community?

While we can't control the internet, we've made a number of specific game design and community decisions that we hope will minimize on the amount of hostility compared to many other online strategy games. Certainly as we test these decisions in beta we will be making refinements and incorporating player feedback.

Is there a single-player campaign?

No, not at this time. However we recognize that not everyone wants to play competitively so we will continue to provide a number of cooperative scenarios that aren't simply copies of the competitive experience. Single player can be achieved using bots.

Does the game include multiplayer? For how many players?

Yes, Sins of a Dark Age is primarily multiplayer and the number of players will depend on the specific scenario. Cooperative scenarios will typically be 5 players (5 versus AI) and competitive scenarios will typically be 10 players (5 versus 5). Bots can be used to create a pseudo singleplayer experience.

How long is a typical game session?

This depends on the scenario and beta feedback but we are aiming for short matches to average around 20 minutes and long games to average around 40 minutes.

Can I play this game online?

Yes, Sins of a Dark Age is an online only game at this point.

Is it difficult to get into an online game?

No, Sins of a Dark Age was designed primarily as an online game and the process will be seamless as long as you have a stable internet connection (though we do allow you to rejoin games if your internet connection is interrupted).

Will my game experience be ruined if players drop out?

We can't control the internet but we've introduced a number of mechanisms to reduce the impact of dropping players. Some you've seen before in other games but some are completely new which we hope will make the experience even more resilient to droppers.

Will my game lag?

We certainly hope not and can't control all the variables but we've developed extremely efficient netcode and partnered with some of the best companies in the world in order to deliver an optimum experience.
