Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month.

Over 10,000 say that they will not buy it

The news that Valve would be releasing a sequel for the successful Left 4 Dead seems to have struck a chord with many fans of the game already saying that despite what they saw in the trailer they will not be buying the sequel.

The group is calling itself L4D Boycott or No-L4D2 and has the support of over 10,000+ fans of the game already, and it appears to be growing at a fairly steady pace. The group has nine basic complaints based on both their experience playing the first Left 4 Dead title and what they saw in the trailer for the new game.

The second major issue seems to be the fact that a release of Left 4 Dead 2 will split the Left 4 Dead community between two titles that are essentially the same game with new visuals and some new weapons.

While no one seems to be disputing that Valve has a right to do what they want with the IP, it seems that we have to agree that a lot of what Valve seems to be offering with Left 4 Dead 2 could be accomplished with purchase downloadable add-on packs; and not enough time has passed for the series to evolve to the point where a sequel is necessary.

We are of the opinion that it is simple economics and Valve is perhaps looking to cash in on the popularity of the game from the stand point that Left 4 Dead 2 will offer more than they could sell in a couple of downloadable add-on packs, and this is the reason to release a full sequel as the sales will simply just be better.

The drama seems far from over, with a variety of forum posts being deleted, posters being removed or banned. At this point it is really unknown how Valve feels about the situation, but certainly they can’t really be happy with a title that has had the success that Left 4 Dead enjoyed to be put under the microscope in this way. Stay tuned folks, as this one is likely far from over.

Left 4 Dead 2

The news that Left 4 Dead 2 will be effectively banned in Australia came as a shock to the folks at developer Valve, VP of marketing Doug Lombardi has told Shacknews.

"We were surprised to hear of this news yesterday," the executive informed us. "Obviously, everyone at Valve is pretty bummed."

Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2 due to its "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence" and gore, effectively banning the zombie shooter sequel as unrated games cannot be sold down under by law.

"It would be a shame if folks in Australia, or anywhere else, are unable to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 because of a ratings issue," Lombardi lamented.

Left 4 Dead 2 hits PC and Xbox 360 elsewhere in the world on November 17, packing a new cast, five campaigns, new enemies, and ratings board-enraging melee weapons.
