  1. Intel Core i7-8700K delidded

    Intel-Core-i7-8700K-vs-7700K-delided.jpg

Intel was not really planning to share this information with anyone yet, but thanks to guys over at HKEPC we get to see what is hidden under the IHS. The die is the same width as Kabylake 7700K, but it is noticeably longer. The 6-core Coffeelake-S CPU has a die size around 151mm2. This is not accurate because the calculations are based on the pixel area, but it it’s good enough for now.

This means that the i7-8700K has around 29mm2 more die area for the additional 2 cores. Every reviewer I spoke with says that 5 GHz should not be a problem on Coffeelake 8700K, especially with AIO cooling. If you want to go higher, delidding is highly recommended although risky. The LGA1151 delidding tools work for Coffeelake, so it’s only a matter of time before you start seeing videos showing the exact process (I think they should go live tomorrow).

The true star of 8th Gen Core series: i5-8400

Most reviewers received two CPUs, the 8700K and 8400. The latter is representing Core i5 series. Based on the reviews I saw, this processor will have an amazing performance to price ratio. This is a 6-core CPU with clock speeds up to 4 GHz. The 7800X and 6800K CPUs look really bad compared to this sub-200 USD CPU. Great value here, if there’s any CPU to go out of stock, it’s probably the i5-8400.

Overnight the 8th Gen Core series went on sale in UK:

Newegg is also selling the new Core series (in stock at the time of writing):

  2. Limited Availability Coffee lake at Launch and in Q4

It is hard to gauge whether or not it’s a bit of a click-bait from some media outlets, but granted it’s possible. Word out is that Coffee Lake processors will see limited availability at launch and the remainder of 2017.

We all know that Intel kinda rushed the Coffee lake launch forward to have an answer to AMD. The quick push forward is likely to result in limited availability of the processor series in Q4 2017 as the original launch was expected to be in Q1 2018.

The guys from SweClockers mention that they did rounds are Swedish etailers and, the word back was that they have very little stock. If that is the case on a global scale, then it will have an adverse effect on final etail pricing of course as high-demand drives up prices.

It seems that Core i7-8700K, Core i5-8600K, and Core i3-8350K are on stock to some degree yet the Core i7-8700, Core i5-8400 and Core i3- 8100 have not even reached the stores yet.

  3. Intel Coffee lake Uses Different Pin Configuration Than Kaby Lake and Skylake on the LGA 1151 Socket

    Παράθεση

Intel added more VSS (ground) and VCC (power) pins for 8th Gen CPUs. This was not really mentioned by Intel during the press call, but apparently, the pin layout is now available explaining why it was necessary to exclude Kabylake CPUs from the support list on Z370 motherboards.

    • VSS: 377 -> 391 (+14)
    • VCC: 128 -> 146 (+18)
    • RSVD: 46 ->25

According to Intel, LGA1151 socket on Z370 motherboards had to be modified for better power delivery for 8th Gen Core CPUs. The backward and forward compatibility questions could’ve all been avoided if Intel added at least one more physical pin or simply name the new socket as LGA1151v2. That did not happen. The electrical pin layout confirms that Coffelake has some RSVD (reserved) LGA1151 pins now occupied by VSS and VCC pins.

    Another Core i7-8700K & Core i5 8600K Review Leaks

    Παράθεση

Another Core i7 8700K review leaks today, this time in Romania. As you guys know, most EU media isn't seeded processors for reviews anymore by Intel (it's like we do not exists to Intel). So when some media then get their hands on some samples, why then abide an embargo right?

So you can't really blame them. This time it is lab501 pushing the results as Monstru posted a review. he makes use of a Gigabyte Aorus motherboard and actually now that i notice it, also uses a Core i5 8600K. The procs do well and puch 5.2 GHz when tweaked (much to what I am seeing here). I'll leave the talking and writing to their article, below some of the benchmarks, courtesy to lab501 of course.

  5. Intel to launch B360, H370 and H310 chipsets in Q1’2018

    Intel H370, H310 and B360 chipsets coming Q1 2018

The slide confirms that Intel did indeed change the naming of their B_50 chipsets to B_60. As we explained this earlier, Intel had no other choice, due to the fact that AMD has already ‘borrowed’ the B350 name for their Ryzen chipset.

The H370, H310 and B360 chipsets will all arrive in the first quarter next year. The interesting part is where Intel has another Coffeelake-S CPUs coming in the same period. The difference is hidden in the TDP (95/65W changes to 65/35W). It’s hard to speculate what parts are being planned here, but Intel confirmed in a press call that Pentium and Celeron processors should be expected around that time.

  8. Intel Core i7-8700K Official Performance

Since a ‘review’ of i7-8700K was already posted by Expreview, I do not think this leak will have a big value to you. What we have are official benchmark results directly from Intel’s reviewers guide thanks to our Chinese friends. Use this as a reference for upcoming reviews or compare values to your own CPU.

Intel Arbitrarily Breaks Coffee Lake Compatibility With Z270 To Force Users To Buy New Z370 Motherboards

    Παράθεση

Intel officially revealed its brand new lineup of 8th generation Coffee Lake processors yesterday.Coffee Lake marks the debut of Intel’s first ever six core mainstream core i7 and core i5 parts as well as its first ever quad core i3 parts.

Intel Wants You To Buy A New Z370 Motherboard With Any Coffee Lake CPU You Choose To Buy

The new family of chips introduce higher cores counts and higher clock speeds in every product tier. With that being said, it’s not all good news. Kaby Lake owners looking to upgrade to Coffee Lake will have to buy new motherboards as Intel has decided to break compatibility with existing 200 series chipset motherboards supported by Kaby Lake.

Intel’s official statement regarding this decision is that the power delivery circuitry required some upgrades to support the higher core count processors and slightly faster DDR4 support, hence why potential buyers will need a 300 series motherboard for Coffee Lake.

    Παράθεση

    Why This Makes No Sense

Intel was asked whether high-end Z270 motherboards with over-engineered power delivery circuitry, of which there are many, will be supported or not and the company’s official response was that no matter what Coffee Lake CPU you buy you will need to pair it with a 300-series chipset motherboard.

    Spoiler

Upon closer inspection of Intel’s arguments we find none of them to be remotely convincing. The TDPs of Coffee Lake processors still max out at 95W, just like Kaby Lake, despite the higher core counts. Additionally, many Z270 motherboards already have beefed up VRMs to enable high overclocks and would have little trouble handling the power requirements of Coffee Lake. Furthermore, nearly all existing Z270 motherboards easily support DDR4 memory speeds far greater than 2666 MHz.

To further underline why none of Intel’s arguments for breaking compatibility make sense we needn’t go back more than a handful of years to when AMD introduced its monstrous 220W FX 9000 series CPUs. These parts had nearly double the TDP of existing FX 8000 series CPUs and required liquid cooling just to run out of the box. They also supported faster memory speeds. Instead of breaking compatibility with existing boards, the company simply certified existing 990FX motherboards that could handle the new CPUs as FX 9000 series compatible. The company has also committed to maintaining AM4 motherboard compatibility with future generations of Ryzen processors.

Truth be told the only apparent reason Intel is breaking compatibility with existing motherboards is that they’re simply after your money.  Intel is a company trying to make a buck after all.  If you’re upgrading to Coffee Lake from Broadwell or an older processor this doesn’t really affect you. But, we believe that this decision will only work to discourage Kaby Lake owners from upgrading to

  10. Intel Z370 Chipset Could Support Kaby lake But Intel Will Not Allow It

    Παράθεση

Much has been said and spoken about Intel upcoming 6-core Coffee Lake processors. It will launch based on a LGA 1151 Socket. We’ve been able to confirm that Z370 will only support Coffee Lake processors. Here’s the shocker, they could support Kaby Lake, yet Intel doesn’t allow it.

According to some board partners the extra pins used on Z370 are merely supported voltage pahs. Ergo, (but not confirmed) perhapsvice versa Coffee lake could have been supported on Z270 as well. But this last bit remains speculation of course. But the reality is, that other processors than Coffee Lake on LGA1151 could have been supported on Z370, yet Intel simply will not allow board partners to support them.

New info also shows that the new 6-core procs can do an all-core 5 GHz overclock on a proper air cooler / liquid cooling without too much complication.

Intel Core i7 8700K Reportedly Reaches 4.8 GHz Easily, 5 GHz+ Requires Delid

    Παράθεση

A report out of Expreview says that users should expect Intel's 8700K 6-core processor to easily clock up to 4.8 GHz with conventional cooling methods. Apparently, the chip doesn't even need that much voltage to achieve this feat either; however, thermal constraints are quickly hit when pushing Intel's latest (upcoming) leader for the mainstream desktop parts. Expreview says that due to the much increased temperatures, users who want to eke out the most performance from their CPU purchase will likely have to try and resort to delidding of their 8700K. While that likely wouldn't have been necessary with Intel's 7700K processors, remember that here we have two extra CPU cores drawing power and producing waste heat, so it makes sense that thermals will be a bigger problem.

Finally coming over to the benchmarks, we have first of all the CPU-Z test. Here, the chip is being compared to the Intel Core i7-7700K. In single threaded test, the 8700K scores 525.4 points while the 7700K scores 492 points. In multi-threaded test, the 8700K scores 3832.6 points compared to 2648 points on the 7700K. In Fritz Chess benchmark, the single thread score is reported at 3513 kilonodes while the multi-threaded score is reported at 24537 kilonodes. The Cinebench R15 score for the Intel Core i7-8700K is 1402 points with all cores and an OpenGL score is reported at 144.33 FPS.

    Intel Core i7-8700K CPU Benchmarks:

Intel Core i7-8700K 5.3 GHz and Intel Core i3-8350K 5.0 GHz Overclock Possible On Good AIO Coolers

Now when it comes to overclocking, there are kind of mixed reports. One Chinese source has said that 5.3 GHz on the Core i7-8700K and 5.0 GHz on the Core i3-8350K are possible with simple core tuning but you would require a good AIO cooler or high-end air coolers to keep these chips cooler under load.

    Intel-Core-i7-8700K-5.3-GHz-OC-740x416.j

Expreview points out that the chips will have really low voltage which means that overclockability will be generally higher but as soon as the chips start going beyond 5.0 GHz, there’s a overheating issue. The reason cited is use of TIM (Thermal Interface Material) instead of solder. Now Intel has been using TIM on their chips for several generations but it remains to be seen just how far these chips can be pushed on standard air and liquid coolers at full load before heat becomes an issue. Expect more details on the Coffee Lake chips in the coming weeks.

  12. Intel 8-core LGA1151 Processor For Z390 Could Be 14 nm Coffee Lake After All

    Παράθεση

Earlier last week we talked a little about the fact that Intel will be releasing another chipset called Z390 late this year. That is next to Coffee lake 6-core processors on the Z370 platform. Some new information appeared online, and the assumption that Z390 would be for 8-core 10nm Ice Lake products seems invalid.

To step that up, it seems to be the case that intel has an 8-core 14nm Coffee Lake processor in the works. The new information surfaced from an XTU errata log is showing change-log entry that reads out as "[CFL] Added support for 8,2 core,", see below. CFL obviously is short for Coffee Lake.

    index.php?ct=news&action=file&id=23400

    Παράθεση

It would be an interesting move from Intel, as typically they design one desktop processor and base all models off from that one proc. To create an additional processor holding 8-cores is very unusual. If correct, this would be a 8-core/16-threaded part in the mainstream segment, and that would mean serious competition for AMD Ryzen 7.

    Intel Core i9-7980XE: early benchmarks

The benchmarks come from Coolenjoy, where we learn that the CPU was tested on ASUS APEX motherboard (designed for overclockers). What was discovered is that the CPU boosts up to 4.2 GHz on all cores during Cinebench. It’s unclear if this is a motherboard-specific feature or this is exactly how it’s supposed to be. Officially the i9-7980X should only boost up to 4.4 GHz on two cores in Turbo Boost Max 3.0 and up to 4.2 GHz in Turbo Max 2.0.

  14. Intel Kabylake CPUs will not work with Z370 motherboards, at least not yet

Guys over at Hardware.info tested what we all wanted to know, the inter-compatibility between the sockets. The short story is that you cannot upgrade your Kabylake processor to a new motherboard (Z370), despite the fact that the motherboard has the same socket. It works both ways, because you cannot use i7-8700K CPU with the Z270/170 motherboard either, but that may just need a new BIOS. The new (Z370) motherboard should, however, already support Kabylake processors, unless, Intel had no plans for it.

The most interesting thing about the roadmap is that it is the first public confirmation of the Z390 chipset. We have already heard a lot about the Z390 chipset but it looks like it will be replacing the Z370 chipset or will be a more better tuned design for high-performance 6 core chips in the Coffee Lake family. For users that are worried if there Z370 investment will go to waste need not to worry a lot as this chipset won’t be available until second half of 2018.
