Samsung Releases 970 PRO and EVO m.2. SSDs

Before we begin with the press release, our samples are delayed in shipment, I expect to post the first review within the next 24 hours. Samsung today announces their Samsung 970 PRO and EVO, the third generation of its industry-leading consumer solid state drive (SSD) lineup. 

The Samsung 970 PRO and EVO are designed based on the M.2 form factor standard and with the latest PCIe Gen 3x4 lane interface. The 970 series maximizes the potential of NVMe bandwidth, delivering unparalleled performance for processing large volumes of data, including 3D, 4K graphics work, high-end games and data analytics.

 

The 970 PRO enables sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,700 MB/s , while the EVO features sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,500 MB/s . The sequential write speeds represent an enhancement of up to 30 percent over the previous generation , thanks to Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology and the newly designed Phoenix controller. The 970 EVO, in particular, utilizes the Intelligent TurboWrite technology, which uses a large buffer size of up to 78GB to enable faster write speeds.

The 970 PRO and EVO will be available for purchase worldwide starting May 7, 2018, with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices starting at $329.99 and $119.99 USD, respectively.

Intel made a slight change in the processor badges and logos. In case if you are wondering what that little + means, well, it simply means that the product is Optane ready.

It seems that Intel is going to push its partners very hard to bundle the processors and motherboards with Optane. Unfortunately, I'm afraid, it'll generate more confusion than anything else.

So in short, in combination with Optane, a manufacturer may use the new "Core i5 / 7/9 +" badges.

ASRock Teases Phantom Gaming Graphics Cards, Rumored to be AMD Radeon Powered

  Whispers have been circulating the techsphere over the past couple of weeks alleging that ASRock may be entering the graphics card market soon in an exclusive partnership with AMD. There was speculation that this move may have potentially been taken by both companies in response to other AIB’s signing on to NVIDIA’s allegedly anti-competitive GeForce Partner Program which is said to preclude them from associating their high-end gaming brands with AMD.

  With that being said, facts surrounding the whole debacle still remain a blend of mystery and a he said she said situation. What’s no longer a mystery however is the fact that ASRock will be entering the graphics card market. Despite some reports that have emerged in German tech media claiming that this isn’t the case, now we have definitive proof directly from ASRock that this is indeed what the company is doing.

AMD Will Send You A Free Processor To Flash Your Motherboard’s BIOS For Ryzen 2000G Raven Ridge APUs

The new chips are compatible with AMD’s existing AM4 socket and 300 series motherboards. However, due to the fact that Raven Ridge is based on an entirely new die, a motherboard BIOS/UEFI update is required. Otherwise the system will simply not boot. Unfortunately however, many motherboards, with a few exceptions, require that you boot up the system first to install update.

This means that even if you grab a new Ryzen APU with a compatible motherboard you might end up faced with the conundrum of a machine that won’t boot. The parts are compatible but the system will simply not start. If the motherboard that you happen to have has a clever feature to enable BIOS updates without booting up then you’re in luck. If you don’t however, fear not, AMD has you covered.

AMD Ryzen 5 2400G gets delidded and temperature tested

Once he successfully delidded the APU he didn't go for direct die cooling, instead, he applied Grizzly Kryonaut + Conductonaut compounds, placed back the APU and heatspreader and continued his test runs. The charts below show the temperature gains at stock clocks and when overclocked to 3975MHz. Further overclocking at the same voltage was only stable to 4000MHz, 25MHz faster, not anything significant. In our review, we reached 3.9 GHz on the stock air cooler.

Samsung 860 EVO M2 and 2.5" SSDs temporarily online at Samsung - Specs Leaked

The page already has been taken down but yesterday the 860 Pro 4TB surfaced, today the EVO edition says hello to the public. The page showed both a 2.5" version with a maximum capacity of 4 TB and an m.2 form factor SSD of 2 TB.

The content has been taken offline again. The M.2 models will become available in versions of 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB, while the 2.5 "also sees a 250 GB and 4 TB model. The 860 EVO offers sequential transfer rates of up to 550 MB/s and up to 520 MB/s sequential writes, up to 97,000 IOPS 4K random reads, and up to 88,000 IOPS 4K random writes according to the product page.

Samsung mentions V-NAND, likely new 64-layer one. Back in October the SSDs already appeared in various databases as well. Also mentioned is that this new-generation flash has been rated for "8 times higher" thus better endurance than the 850 EVO series; with up to 2,400 TBW, for the biggest volume size SSD.

The new leak indicates a launch, very soon.

Samsung 860 Pro (4TB) Shows On Company Website

It's likely a bit of a mistake, then again could be done to create a bit of a viral. But a new Samsung series 860 PRO SSD just turned up on the company website. The thing is, this is a 4TB model.

4TB is rather something, this means Samsung is ready with their MLC NAND from the 64-layer Vertical stacked NAND production for high volume. We're sure that in due time there will be 250, 500, 1TB and 2TB models available as well. The 4 TB models has a listed price as well, it's 1900 USD, which is 47 cents per GB.
