Aliens: Colonial Marines is an upcoming video game in development by Gearbox Software and published by Sega for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS. The game is a first-person shooter based on the characters and creatures of the Alien franchise, particularly the film Aliens.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a squad-based first-person shooter in which the player controls four Colonial Marines, each with a different personality and primary weapon. Each player character can carry additional weapons including a flamethrower, pulse rifle, smartgun, pistol, RPG, and many types of grenades.[4]

The player controls one marine at a time, issues orders to the others using context-sensitive commands, and may switch between characters at any time.[5] The player will also occasionally be required to control a particular location, using tactical positioning and turrets to fend off attacks.[5] Unlike many other first-person shooter games, Aliens: Colonial Marines will have no HUD to provide the player with onscreen information.[6]

The primary enemies of the game are Aliens which will generally attempt to sneak up on or outflank the player, forcing the player to use tactical combat to confront them. Several different types of Aliens will appear and will attack differently. Facehuggers will attempt to attach themselves to the player character's face, implanting an embryo inside them which will then kill them. "Warrior" Aliens are the primary enemies and are based primarily on the appearance of the Alien in Aliens. "Scouts" are faster and will spy on the player characters' activities. They will work in small groups or alone. These Aliens will be based on the appearance seen in Alien. "Drones" primarily carry and position eggs and work in the heart of the Hive serving the Queen; they were originally going to be in Aliens along with the "Warriors". An Alien queen will also appear as a "boss" enemy.[7] Quick time events will be used for one-on-one combat between the player characters and Aliens. The Aliens will occasionally flee rather than attack when confronted by more than one marine. Quick time events are also the primary mechanic when the player is attacked by a facehugger.

Gearbox may have jump-started Duke Nukem’s long-stalled engine this weekend, but that doesn’t mean the developer’s not familiar with Duke Nukem Forever-style stalling shenanigans itself. Aliens Colonial Marines, however, is still alive and kicking, and during its PAX panel, Gearbox gave the audience a quick glimpse at how things are coming along.

Kotaku snapped a few pictures of the new screenshots during the presentation. Obviously, they’re not perfect, but a lopsided picture of a screenshot’s still better than no screenshot at all.

Click through the link to see them all, and then wonder why Colonial Marines don’t choose to hang out in better lighted locations. Come on! You’re a marine. It is dark. Mathematically speaking, there’s a 99 percent probability a wormy, slobbering alien is right behind you this very second. How are you guys not getting this?

Randy Pitchford has said Aliens: Colonial Marines was announced too soon by SEGA, as it was “very excited” over the project.

Speaking with NowGamer at the Duke Nukem Forever event in London last week, the Gearbox CEO said despite the “radio silence” on Colonial Marines, the studio is still “very, very committed” to the title.

“Gearbox has over 200 people and we also, at any given moment, have another 100 or 200 people outside of the studio who work with us,” he said. “Duke Nukem Forever is consuming about 70 staff, so there’s still a huge amount of push power behind our other projects.

“We’re very, very committed to Aliens: Colonial Marines and we’re very excited about that project. I know it’s been ‘radio silent’ for long and we know that must be frustrating for some people, but the game was announced too soon.

“There was so much excitement and I know a lot has changed at SEGA, but they were very excited, they did the deal with Fox and before the ink was even dry they issued a press release announcing it. At the time we hadn’t written a single line of code yet.

“It takes time to build games, but it’s going great and I’m very excited about it. It won’t be long before we break radio silence and we’re able to show it.”

Pitchford’s comments reflect those made to VG247 during PAX Prime, when Duke Nukem Forever was announced as no longer being in the can and received a rollicking re-reveal at the event

The Gearbox bossman told us he knew that when “one game gets its day in the sun” folks tend to “worry about the other games”, but there was “no need to worry at all” regarding Colonial Marines or any other title from the studio.

“Seriously, no one needs to worry about Borderlands, or the Brothers in Arms brand, or Aliens – we care about these games and what they mean to people,” he said.

Still no date on it though
