      Bulldozer Overclocked to 8.58GHz

      Guest

Last week, we reported that Andre Yang had managed to overclock AMD's FX-8150 CPU to 8.46GHz, breaking the former record set by AMD. Andre Yang has now been able to break his own record by[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] roughly 120MHz, which is fairly notable increase given that the previous record he set was only 30MHz greater than the record before that. The new world record is 8584.8MHz to be exact, 123.3MHz greater than the previous. The record is not official yet, though, as it has not appeared in CPU-Z's validation database.
Andre used the same Crosshair V Formula motherboard and the only difference seems to be the higher core voltage, which was 2.076V in the new record (1.992V in the old one). Andre used liquid nitrogen for cooling, so even higher overclocks could be achieved with liquid helium, which liquefies at -269 Celsius while it's -196 Celsius for nitrogen in atmosphere pressure. Bulldozer's upcoming B3 stepping could also improve the overclock-ability, possibly making 9GHz plausible.

      H LSI αγοραζει την SandForce

      Guest

For much of the past year I've been hearing SandForce wanted to be bought. The price? $300M - $400M. A bit too rich for OCZ's blood, but a figure that I felt wasn't too high given the immense technological [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]advantage that SandForce enjoyed. SandForce's biggest issue? It needed a partner that would bring sound validation methodology and the resources to actually test SF drives. I mentioned to many players in the SSD and HDD space that they should simply buy SandForce and make this easier on everyone. Today LSI announced that it would be the company to try and do just that.
Pending the typical closing conditions and regulatory approvals, LSI will acquire SandForce for $322M in cash plus assume another $48M in unvested SF stock options. LSI isn't much of a player in the consumer space but it hopes to use SandForce's controllers in a go at the enterprise market. A look back at the Vertex 3 in our Intel SSD 710 review shows just how strong SandForce's architecture can be in database server workloads. As I've written before, the enterprise space is where the high margin sales are and as a result many players in the SSD space are focusing on it.
For now don't expect anything to change with regards to SF drives in the client space, but OCZ's timing with Octane probably couldn't have been any better.

      Foxconn Quantum Force X79

      Guest

Foxconn's latest premium gamer-overclocker segment motherboard, the Quantum Force X79, has finally taken shape. Foxconn's Quantum Force motherboards are designed to offer good overclocking features at a great value.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] The Quantum Force X79 uses a 14-phase VRM to power the LGA2011 "Sandy Bridge-E" processor, plus a 2-phase VRM for the memory. There are four DDR3 DIMM slots, one per memory channel. Expansion slots include three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (PCI-E1_x16, PCI-E3_x16, and PCI-E4_x16. The second black slot (PCI-E2_x16) is electrical PCI-Express 2.0 x8.
The board is packed with features that help overclockers, starting with triple redundant BIOS, voltage measurement points for manual voltage measurements (with a wide range of voltage domains), manual overclocking buttons on board, power, reset, clear-CMOS buttons, POST speaker, and plenty of fan headers.

Swiftech Apogee HD Flagship CPU Waterblock and MCRx20 Drive (Rev 3) Radiator

      Guest

Swiftech announced the release for retail sales of their new flagship CPU waterblock, the Apogee HD, concurrently with Revision 3 of the Patent Pending MCRx20 Drive series of PC radiators. Close to 18 months in[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] the making, the Apogee HD was designed to surpass its predecessor the Award Winning Apogee XT in all critical areas: improved thermal performance, reduced flow restriction, new choices of colors, classic black or fashionable white, fine-tuned mounting system, lower cost, and an exclusive innovative feature that works in conjunction with the new Revision of the MCRx20 Drive PC Radiators: the Multi-port connectivity.

      Asrock X79 Extreme9

      Guest

ASRock's socket LGA2011 motherboard lineup doesn't end with X79 Extreme7 as thought before, the company thinks there's scope for an even more loaded model that's literally bursting with connectivity and[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] expansion features. Enter the X79 Extreme9. This board uses high-grade digital PWM circuitry to power the CPU. It draws power for the CPU VRM from two 8-pin EPS connectors. Unlike the X79 Extreme7, this board features eight DDR3 DIMM slots, two per memory channel. Expansion slots include five PCI-Express 3.0 x16, and a PCIe x1.
Since it completely ran out of room on the main PCB, ASRock put two important connectivity features on a separate (included) addon card, called the ASRock "Game Blaster". This card occupies the PCIe x1 slot, it packs a next-generation Creative SoundCore audio processor (more advanced than X-Fi), and a low-overhead/low-latency gigabit Ethernet connection. It's not exactly known if this connection is driven by a Killer 2100 or a more common PCIe GbE PHY backed by ASRock's proprietary packet prioritization software (XLAN).
