Benchmarking Performance: CPU Encoding Tests - The AMD Zen and Ryzen 7 Review: A Deep Dive on 1800X, 1700X and 1700

Encodage vidéo : x264 et x265 - AMD Ryzen 7 1800X en test, le retour d'AMD ? - HardWare.fr

AMD's ability to produce Zen is astounding given its size, even with the experience and skill under the hood. The CPU has a traditional uArch and does well, especially compared to last generation AMD, and a new high-perf core will be a feather in their cap. We see a lot of benchmark results where AMD is clearly equal or above Intel's HEDT parts in both ST and MT. However there are a few edge cases where AMD is lacking behind 10-20% still, even to Broadwell. These edge cases are difficult to anticipate, and can stem from unoptimized code. One of the benefits of Intel's big R&D juggernaut is the ability to process those edge cases, through prefetch, memory algorithms, and extensive testing. So despite the best will, there's still a large element to having a substantial budget to hire 300+ more engineers to cater for that, which is something AMD wasn't able for Zen or Ryzen.

But Senior Engineer Mike Clark says he knows where the easy gains are for Zen 2, and they're already working through the list. A question is then if Intel continues at 5% performance gains clock for clock each year, can AMD make 5-15% and close the gap?

AMD's Ryzen Will Really Like A Newer Linux Kernel

Written by Michael Larabel in AMD on 26 February 2017 at 08:57 PM EST. 73 Comments
AMD -- AMD's Ryzen CPU is finally shipping in a few days! If you are planning to be an early adopter of AMD Ryzen processors, you will really want to be running a newer Linux kernel release for proper support and performance.

I haven't received any communication from AMD about any review samples or the like, so I am not under NDA for the upcoming AMD Ryzen launch on 2 March... And thankfully received some information from a reliable source this weekend regarding Ryzen support Linux requirements. So here they are.

I am told that if using Ubuntu 16.10 / Ubuntu 16.04.2 as a base state for AMD Ryzen, users should generally be okay. In other words, you won't get a kernel oops on boot or anything dramatic like that but could be missing some functionality. However, you will really be better off with a newer Linux kernel.

As I wrote about back in December, Linux 4.10 landed a lot of Zen/Ryzen code. So with Linux 4.10 looks to be -- and reaffirmed by this trusted confidant -- a good point for AMD Ryzen testing and usage. So far in the Linux 4.11 cycle we haven't seen anything Ryzen-specific appear to come through.

But if you don't feel comfortable moving to the recently-released Linux 4.10 or your distribution hasn't yet offered you an easy upgrade path, an alternative is to be running at least Linux 4.9.10.

I was pointed out in particular to this kernel commit that only landed in early February: "x86/CPU/AMD: Fix Zen SMT topology." It notes in the commit message, "After: a33d331761bc ("x86/CPU/AMD: Fix Bulldozer topology") our SMT scheduling topology for Fam17h systems is broken, because the ThreadId is included in the ApicId when SMT is enabled. So, without further decoding cpu_core_id is unique for each thread rather than the same for threads on the same core. This didn't affect systems with SMT disabled. Make cpu_core_id be what it is defined to be." That mentioned regression was introduced only in January but had been pulled back into stable kernel point releases from Linux 4.6 and newer. This fix for the (Ry)zen SMT topology is in Linux 4.10 and was back-ported to Linux 4.9.10+ for those still riding the 4.9 kernel.

Without that fix, you could be affected by broken SMT scheduling topology. Simultaneous Multi-Threading is one of the new features for AMD Ryzen/Zen and will play a big role. For instance, with the Ryzen 7 CPUs they are 8 cores but 16 threads via SMT. If you care about multi-threaded performance, just make sure you are riding a newer kernel release.

I am told that besides that, recent Linux kernels should be in good shape, but as generally is the case: the newer the better. One of the bigger focuses could be on the AMD Ryzen motherboard support. Some Ryzen launch motherboards are using the Realtek ALC1220 audio codec, for example, and that is support is only coming to Linux 4.11. Among the AMD motherboards using the ALC1220 codec are the Biostar X370GT7, Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming 5, Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3, and others.

H AMD με του ZEN 7 8CORE/16T έχει καταφέρει να βγάλει off ολόκληρη την HEDT πλατφόρμα της Intel (s2011-3).

... :p:hehe::hehe:

AMD responds to 1080p gaming tests on Ryzen | PC Perspective

Quote

“As we presented at Ryzen Tech Day, we are supporting 300+ developer kits with game development studios to optimize current and future game releases for the all-new Ryzen CPU. We are on track for 1000+ developer systems in 2017. For example, Bethesda at GDC yesterday announced its strategic relationship with AMD to optimize for Ryzen CPUs, primarily through Vulkan low-level API optimizations, for a new generation of games, DLC and VR experiences.

Oxide Games also provided a public statement today on the significant performance uplift observed when optimizing for the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 7 CPU design – optimizations not yet reflected in Ashes of the Singularity benchmarking. Creative Assembly, developers of the Total War series, made a similar statement today related to upcoming Ryzen optimizations.

CPU benchmarking deficits to the competition in certain games at 1080p resolution can be attributed to the development and optimization of the game uniquely to Intel platforms – until now. Even without optimizations in place, Ryzen delivers high, smooth frame rates on all “CPU-bound” games, as well as overall smooth frame rates and great experiences in GPU-bound gaming and VR. With developers taking advantage of Ryzen architecture and the extra cores and threads, we expect benchmarks to only get better, and enable Ryzen excel at next generation gaming experiences as well.

Game performance will be optimized for Ryzen and continue to improve from at-launch frame rate scores.” John Taylor, AMD

Quote

“Oxide games is incredibly excited with what we are seeing from the Ryzen CPU. Using our Nitrous game engine, we are working to scale our existing and future game title performance to take full advantage of Ryzen and its 8-core, 16-thread architecture, and the results thus far are impressive. These optimizations are not yet available for Ryzen benchmarking. However, expect updates soon to enhance the performance of games like Ashes of the Singularity on Ryzen CPUs, as well as our future game releases.” - Brad Wardell, CEO Stardock and Oxide

Quote

"Creative Assembly is committed to reviewing and optimizing its games on the all-new Ryzen CPU. While current third-party testing doesn’t reflect this yet, our joint optimization program with AMD means that we are looking at options to deliver performance optimization updates in the future to provide better performance on Ryzen CPUs moving forward. " – Creative Assembly, Developers of the Multi-award Winning Total War Series

Νομίζω ότι το gamers nexus είναι από τα πιο αξιόπιστα σάιτ και εκεί τα αποτελέσματα δεν φαίνονται ιδιαίτερα καλά. Ακόμα και dx12 games σαν το ashes δεν τρέχουν όπως αναμενόταν. Μήπως τελικά εκείνα τα παλιά leaks του AOTS ήταν αληθινά;
